Thanksgiving Cornucopia Centerpiece

Thrifty find...Ceramic Horn of Plenty
In my quest to get our Thanksgiving preparations finished well before the celebration, I worked on the menu and the table centerpiece today. How are you doing with your preparations? I've handled holidays both ways...early prep and last minute frenzy, and I've learned that, no matter which method I use, everything that really matters gets done.

Holidays are usually spent with people we love who aren't really concerned with  place cards or how I fold the napkins. Sure, they will probably notice any extra efforts and appreciate them, but the celebration won't be any less wonderful if I don't have the magazine cover table setting or a party favor for everyone. So I am going to early prep some stuff... and probably get distracted by life and go into a frenzy later, as the day approaches.
Supplies - Cornucopia,
Silk flowers, Candle, Florist foam

A few weeks back, I shared pictures from a thrifty shopping haul. Part of that successful adventure included a ceramic horn of plenty (or cornucopia...I just love that word!) When I saw it, I knew I wanted to make it the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving table.  So today - after reading a How-To article on arranging cornucopia centerpieces - I pulled out all of my supplies and got busy.  I'm very happy with the result, although I'm sure someone with proper training on such things could find my flubs.

Now that the centerpiece is in place, here is my tentative menu for our Thanksgiving dinner.

Deep Fried Turkey*
Sausage Stuffing Muffins
Corn Pudding
Broccoli Casserole
Cranberry Relish
7UP Biscuits
Deviled Eggs
Fruit Salad
Waldorf Astoria Red Velvet Cake
Apple Orchard Punch or White Cranberry Lime Punch
*we've been frying our turkeys for many years now.

I would love to hear how your preparations are coming! Do you have Thanksgiving traditions? We actually have our Thanksgiving on the Saturday of the OSU-Michigan game! We gather for the game each year and, rather than several long distance trips in the same week, we've combined the two.

  2. Thankfully, I don't have proper training as I think your cornucopia centerpiece is BEAUTIFUL!! You have such an eye for detail & making it all work :) I felt a little kinship with you as I too have fall leaves spread out on my table AND my husband too deep fries our turkey. When we first started doing it we did it by our pool so that if it caught on fire, he could just kick it into the pool...ha ha Thank goodness it never has :) I host at my house & my mom comes over early to help. By the way, CONGRATS on winning the cooking challenge AGAIN!! Yeah for you & another award winning recipe :)

  7. I'm delighted you like it! I know there are probably some 'technical boo-boo's' in my arrangement, but if I don't know what they are, they can't bug me! lol!
I love that you have leaves on your table and your family has fried turkey too! Isn't it the best! Frying is incredibly dangerous, I know, and we've had some close calls, but once you've had fried it's hard to go back!
THANKS! OMGoodness...I am blown away that I won the Cooking Challenge again.

  8. Anita,
Thank you! Confidence wanes with me when I undertake a project that is new and I appreciate the encouraging words! How wonderful that your kids are coming home for the holiday! I hope you have a wondrous time together! Thanks for sharing your muffins (I love blueberry muffins!) and the Oreo pie...both sound amazing.

  13. I agree with you, sometimes when I see all the elaborate table setting I think whoa, I like your centerpiece and beautiful and simple (in a good way). I like fall leaves spread across the table, simple and natural. I'm to afraid to fry a turkey, I make my using a recipe from Cook's Illustrated. It's my favorite, can send it to you if you want. Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving and thanks so much for sharing on Sunday's Best.
